Join us to learn about Copyrights, Trademarks, Trade Secrets and Patents:
- Copyrights: What is a copyright? – How and why to get a copyright registration. Copyright ownership issues – Copyright agreements and transfer
- Trademarks: What is a trademark? – Common law trademark v. federal registration. How to get a trademark – Trademark timing
- Trade secrets: What is a trade secret? – Benefits of trade secrets (compared to patents)
- Patents: What is a patent? – Why is a patent valuable – What’s required to get a patent. Common patent pitfalls.
Kevin Soules is a registered patent attorney, specializing in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications. Kevin has worked closely with clients ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies helping them to develop robust IP portfolios. Kevin also has experience handling copyrights, trademarks, and intellectual property litigation. Kevin is chair of the IP law section of the New Mexico State Bar, has served as an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law, teaching a course on patent law, and is a Mentor for the Innovate Texas Tech Mentorship Program.
A native New Mexican, Kevin graduated with honors from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2009, where he also received honors pursuing concurrent degrees in Physics and Applied Mathematics. He also worked as a research assistant at BUAP University in Puebla, Mexico, developing software to model classical and quantum dynamic systems.
This is a brown-bag lunch and learn event so bring your own lunch! Soft drinks and water will be provided. This workshop is free – but you do need to register!
